t’s a question no proud golfer wants to be asked.
But when
someone starts routinely missing short putts, it’s only a
matter of time before the query is issued.
The politically
correct manner to ask might be, “Are you losing your nerves?”
But there is no mistaking the real question.
“Do you have the yips?”
Ah, yes.
The evil “y” word.
Much like poisonous “s” word
(shank), no one wants to hear the word “yips” uttered in their
direction.
But it happens.
Maybe it’s happening to you.
Do you feel
an increase in tension before and/or during your putting stroke?
Does this tension start in your hands and work its way up your
arms, resulting in a jerky jab at the ball?
One generally can think of the yips as a reaction to the
anticipation of failure.
Similar to when you’re the passenger in
a car and you hit your imaginary brake before the driver does.
We want to exert control over the outcome.
