In very young infants, these rashes are generally seen on the face, trunk and limbs. In older children, they generally occur on creases in front of the elbow, behind the knees and around the neck. It is important to have these treated appropriately for several reasons, such as: Improving the quality of life during an activity and sleep To prevent secondary skin infections caused by itching To identify underlying food and environmental allergies that may be causing the rash. In India, national statistics are not available, but western statistics give us some idea on arriving at estimates in India. In my clinic at the Apollo Children s Hospital, Chennai, I frequently come across diagnosed and yet to be diagnosed patients with asthma. By definition, asthma is a recurrent, reversible airway disease (meaning the breathing passages get narrower) due to various trigger factors such as viruses and bacterial infection, allergies, stress and external environmental factors. In children the diagnosis is often made after ruling out common diseases like tuberculosis and other chest conditions which might mimic asthma.
